However, there is one downside: if you have long file names, the columns never seem to have enough width by default to read it all.  You can, of course, resize them by dragging the separator between two columns: they have a little handle at the bottom for that very purpose.

If you want to alter the default column size, Alt-drag that handle.  This will not only increase the size of all columns in every open Finder window, but that new dimension will now become the default whenever you open a new window.

If you’d rather resize a single column, instead of dragging that handle, double-click on it: this will increase its size just enough to not truncate any name contained within.

You could force Safari to open these links in new tabs by Option-clicking on them, but if you’d prefer not to hold down the Option key all the time, you can make Safari open the links in new tabs by editing a hidden preference setting.  To do this, quit Safari, open Terminal (/Application/Utilities), and enter this command, followed by Return

defaults write com.apple.Safari TargetedClicksCreateTabs –bool true

When you relaunch Safari, links that would normally open new windows should open in new foreground tabs instead.  (To open tabs in the background, use the Option-click solution mentioned earlier)

To disable this hidden setting, quit Safari again, enter the following command in Terminal, and then press Return again

defaults write com.apple.Safari TargetedClicksCreateTabs

If you use Safari 4’s Top Sites feature, which displays sites you visit on an image wall.  If, however, you never use this feature, dump the images and use the following technique to prevent them from stacking up again.

To dump the images, choose Safari > Reset Safari and, in the window that appears, select only the ‘Remove All Webpage Preview Images’ option and click the Reset button.  To stop Safari from gathering more images, navigate to youruserfolder/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari and select the Webpage Previews folder. Press Option+L.  In the resulting window, enable the Locked option.  Once the folder has been locked in this way, Safari will find it impossible to save images to it.

Create a script

Open Applications > AppleScript > Script Editor and type:

on device_is_connected(device_name)
  set check_for_device to “ioreg –rn” & quoted form of device_name
  return (length of (do shell script check_for_device) is not equal to 0)
end device_is_connected

Save the script

Now add the lines:

on run
  if not device_is_connected(“iPhone”) then
    tell application “iPhoto” to activate
  end if
end run

Launch it automatically

Click File > Save As… and set the format to Application.  Save it to the Applications folder.  Open Applications > Image Capture and the preferences pane.  Click Other and select the script.  This runs when a camera is inserted but for the iPhone it quits before starting iPhoto.

It’s actually very simple, just follow the wizard and you’re all set to go.  One of the great things about it is that it displays you’re current WP theme in the editor, and conforms to the CSS aswell….which means you can see exactly how you’re post will be displayed.

Aswell as all the usual editing features such as inserting links, pictures, tables, you can also add extra plug-ins developed by the community, most of which are free.
